How do public events affect ridership?

Major public events like concerts and sporting events cause sudden spikes in demand for public transportation—an important concern for transportation planners. To understand this effect, we analyzed ridership before and after Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox games. We calculated "lift" in entries across the entire T system and at the particular stations that serve each team's venue. Each team shows characteristic patterns both in how fans commute to games and how they use the T to get home.
